The fruit from the real world that has inspired the Acarú is the Mango.
Originally from Asia, the Mango (Mangifera indica) is part of the Anacardiaceae family. In Brazil, this family is represented by some well-known species. The Cashew is a good example when talking about the North and Northeast regions of the country, while the peppertrees are more common in the southern regions.
When traveling around Brazil, especially in the Southeast, Northeast and North, a tourist will run into so many Mango trees he may think it is a native species.
This abundance usually happens to living organisms that are new to a certain territory. Free from the population regulating agents, like predators, pests and the competition for resources, these trees proliferate better in Brazil than in its original habitat.
The Mango is referred to, by some authors, as the tastiest fruit in the world, although there are some precautions about its consumption. The Anacardiaceae family is known for the production of some substances that may cause allergic reactions.
The same applies to the Acarú. The virtue of the Muras, especially the cooks, is on their capability to control all active substances of the fruit, which are attenuated on the different recipes in which the fruit is used.
